Pub lunch at The Barony

31st July 2019 By ohtaste

The Barony, Edinburgh

First opened as a drinks merchant in 1896 before becoming a pub, The Barony is a firm fixture on recommendation lists for Scotland’s Capital and a favourite of Edinburgh locals.

Original Victorian features including real fireplaces, brewery mirrors, hand-painted 19th-century tiles and a beautiful wooden bar are just the tip of the iceberg. The food is just as impressive as the interior.

We were invited along to review their menu a couple of weeks ago. I started with coley goujons and Mexican dip (which definitely packed a punch), while my husband enjoyed a luxurious and hearty sweet potato and chilli soup – perfect eating for this Scottish ‘summer’. Next, we went traditional with a beer-battered haddock fish & chips, garden peas, tartare sauce and a 6oz Barony burger laden with bacon and cheese and served with hand-cut chips. Everything was delicious, but the burger was sensational. Juicy, succulent Scottish beef piled high with toppings of your choice. Oh, and chips to rival anywhere in Edinburgh.

We are lucky enough to live just down the road, and while not close enough to call it our local, we are certainly fortunate to have one of Edinburgh’s best pub lunches on our doorstep. Well known for its delicious, freshly-prepared gastropub menu, The Barony also has an impressive bar selection, including craft gins, local ales and enough single malts to sink a small ship. As a gin lover, I was delighted to see Harris gin on the menu, one of my favourites.

Events at The Barony

As well as a stellar menu, they also have different deals and events throughout the week.

Monday: Pub Quiz
Barony Pub Quiz from 8.30 – 10.30pm. (Questions are set by a Mastermind champ!)

Tuesday: Barony Burger Night
Enjoy two burgers for £15 from 5 pm.

Wednesday: Steak Pie Night
Every Wednesday evening, get a steak pie and a pint for just £15

Saturday: Jazz Afternoon
Kick-off your weekend with some live music at The Barony. Each Saturday afternoon from 3-5pm, The Barony hosts some of Edinburgh’s top jazz musicians. Check out the Live Music page for details of who’s playing this week.

Sunday: Sunday Blues

With a five-month-old baby in tow, we’re always looking for baby-friendly places to visit. We couldn’t have been made to feel more welcome at The Barony, and they even have a licence for children up to 10 pm. When they say everyone’s welcome, they really do mean it. (Dogs are allowed too.)

Find them: 81-85 Broughton Street, Edinburgh, EH1 3RJ
